Felicity Green - The Witch Club (Scottish Witches Mysteries #1)

I received an ARC ebook for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Dessie - young owner of Bed and Breakfast accommodation in the Scottish Highlands, who still, after ten years, waits for her husband to come back to her, after he went missing in the same neighborhood.

Andie - Dessies employee, who has a special mission and tries to protect Dessie while she’s not allowed to expose her intentions.

There are weird things happening around the village and everybody seems to be connected to Dessie's husband disappearing.

At first, I couldn’t get past the first chapters. The author's writing style seemed too easy and chaotic. But something kept me reading. The cover suggests this book would be similar to ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’. I expected a cozy mystery (fun, cocoa, tea…). I’ve got thriller, suspense and dark secrets instead.

The witches are not that prevalent in the first book. There is more mystery around them, and we aren’t even sure what's going on with them. All the loose ends tie towards the end, and you see the true character of everybody. There’s only one thing missing. And that's an explanation of how the witches work and chant. I hope we get more of their coven and witchcraft detectives in the next books.

I really liked the atmosphere and story in the Novus Dies book. It’s a well-built start to The Posterity Doctrine series. The story takes place in 2364. Robots are beginning to behave in a very weird way. We're following the main protagonists, a wife and husband couple working for the Special Task Force. Kate and Monthy Park are super badass fighters.

The author, Schalk Holloway, decided to give us in the beginning of every chapter an excerpt from a dated material source. It helps with imagining the scifi future. It's not only about robots, but about a society with new norms and ways of raising kids. Every adult citizen must be able to regulate their emotions.

I really enjoyed the themes and worldbuilding in this book. Dark atmosphere of metro tunnels and robots going rouge. This is my first book written by Schalk Holloway and definitely not the last. I’m looking forward to the next book.
