loved this ode to friendship. i think the comparison to JUST KIDS (by the atlantic) is right, but to me this lacked the kind of gut punch a writer like hanif abdurraqib could have brought to this story.

i struggled with the leaping time periods and the dialogue at times. totally on me and not the book — i might come back to it in the future when i have a stronger ability to concentrate

brady does an incredible job of melding unflinching memoir, medical information and social commentary. i raced through this book in a day and a half, but know i’ll come back to — not just the sections i underlined but the book as a whole — with lasting gratitude

not sure if it was the writing style or the closeness of subject that detached me from this novel and made it a slow, difficult read, but i’m always grateful to see nuanced portrayals of mental illness (in this case bipolar disorder).

i loved the exploration of friendship and of a woman coming of age despite of entrenched misogyny, but the flow of this novel didn’t quite do it for me and i found some of the extended food elements a bit distracting
