I absolutely loved being able to come back to the world that exists in the shades of magic universe. The characters I loved are there, the new characters are fascinating and interesting and making me like them and hate them in their own way (as they should), and the plot is intriguing and has me wanting the next book already so I can figure out what happens next.

And for all the love I have for this book and the world within it, it did at times have a lot of 'I need to tell you this so you can understand what happens' in an overly tell all at once way. It's definitely not info-dumping in any sense, as it is all written out like a story and you get to read it, but by the fifth time we're taken back in time to see a characters backstory over the years between the end of shades of magic and the start of this new arc, I got slightly annoyed. It didn't help the story progressed and I didnt at all times want to know anything, and found myself a little bored. Now, I realize that a lot of those bits and pieces of the story that you get from those passages are important, I've noted those, and then annoyed myself at all the extra. A taste of this can be nice, but too much and you lose interest. I loved the book and I love V.E. Schwab, but those bits were a little too many a little too often. And the book itself felt very much like a long exsposition for what is to come in the next books. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just was enough to drag this book down from the five stars I thought I'd give it before I started reading it.

With all this in mind, I don't know how long I actually can wait for the next book, because I really want to know what happens next. V.E. Shcwab is an amazing storyteller, an amazing writer, and I am certainly more than intrigued of what comes next for this world and its characters.
