Book 2 of the series got off to a somewhat slow start. I was trying to figure out what Lila was actually up to, and when the royal brothers were gonna get their angsty selves together. But once the plot started rolling, I was absolutely hooked.

What I loved:
  • Rhy and Kell’s brotherly shenanigans
  • Alucard is mysterious and slightly sexy (still waiting for the full backstory but I know it’s gonna kill me)
  • Lila is such a boss babe: watching her discover her magic and take the world by a storm was everything I never knew I wanted
  • Setting up for the third book - I am so glad I already downloaded it

What didn’t work for me:
  • The pacing in the beginning - I didn’t know why Lila was on a ship and how things were going to tie back together… and I just wanted to get to the tournament already
  • The pseudo-slow burn between Lila and Kell is a hard pass. I don’t feel the chemistry, and I think they would’ve been better as friends. It felt like she threw in the romance because she was trying to draw That Audience, but the story would be perfectly fine without romance whatsoever.

You had me at magical typewriters 😍

The only reason I’m docking this 1/4 star is because I just have so many questions I want answered. Who are these gods really, and why are they actually mad at each other? How do these typewriters actually work? And
where tf is Roman at the end of the book???
I guess I will have to wait for my library hold on Ruthless Vows to come through so I can find out!

The stakes are higher than ever for Kaz and crew, and this kept me on the edge of my seat at every turn, dying to know if they would survive intact.

I will say, not every character had my whole heart, but Wylan and Jesper are everything to me. I could honestly do without the other pairings in the duology.

Series Overall: fell a bit flat for me. I never felt connected to the characters, despite being shoved in Alina’s head the whole time. I never felt myself rooting for her relationship with Mal. To be honest, I think if I had read this series years ago and before reading Bardugo’s other books, I might not be so disappointed, but this was clearly her first major go at it. The storyline itself and the world is amazing, but the execution just wasn’t it for me. I’m still glad I read it though!

While I enjoyed the concept of the series, Siege and Storm falls victim to second book syndrome in that it feels like not much is happening. The best part of the entire book was the addition of Nikolai’s character. The worst part of the book, honestly, was Alina’s narration.

I started the ACOTAR series a year ago, but I finally got around to reading 𝙰 𝙲𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚂𝚒𝚕𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝙵𝚕𝚊𝚖𝚎𝚜 and I’m so glad I did!

The story follows Nesta, Feyre’s cranky, traumatized older sister, as she deals with her past demons and comes into her power (literally and metaphorically). This book has a little of everything: political intrigue, power-hungry formerly mortal queens, steamy spicy romance, girl power warrior Valkyries… but what stuck out to me the most was Nesta’s journey toward self-love.

If you’ve been on the fence about ACOTAR, definitely stick it out for Nesta’s story!

A Court of Frost and Starlight is a cute interlude after the high stakes political drama that was A Court of Wings and Ruin

I enjoyed getting to see the Court of Dreams interact in a less stressful environment, and there is certainly some setup for what’s to come next. My favorite part was getting different perspectives instead of only reading from Feyre’s POV.

That being said, if/when I reread the series, I will likely skip this book. It was light and cute, but I don’t feel like it added that much to the storyline of the ACOTAR series as a whole. It felt like the Christmas special of your favorite TV show that you skip while re-binging, but you put it on in the background while decorating your house for the holidays.

A Court of Thorns and Roses takes you on a wild emotional ride.

What starts as a take on Beauty & the Beast, with a human falling for a powerful High Lord of the fae, eventually winds up in a high stakes battle for control of the entire realm.

I enjoyed this much more on re-reading, once I realized
that Tamlin and Feyre aren’t the endgame romance of the entire series. Which, honestly, I think says something deeper about love in general. When you’re young and less experienced, you think your first love is EVERYTHING. It’s only when you’ve been through some stuff that you grow and change, and so do your romantic desires.

Can’t wait to re-read Book 2!
