A Midsummer Night #nofilter by Brett Wright, William Shakespeare

Right down my alley of humor, ngl. I had my dumb bitch juice this morning.
No Fear Shakespeare: Hamlet by William Shakespeare
4.0
Me, ca. 5 years ago when I was forced to read Romeo and Juliet in English class: I fucking hate Shakespeare and I will never touch anything by him again. Ever.
Gini, my beautiful honeycake: But look, it's modern, I love my disaster son.
Me, before reading: o no
Me, now: sip sip sipping the tea, this guy was a genius at writing dumbasses and drama.
I never would have thought I'd enjoy Shakespeare but all of these characters were so massively STUPID, I loved it. I gave up reading the original script and switched to the translation like a third or so in but still.
Hamlet is slutshaming his mom and then calls EVERY woman a thot and he just fucks up everything by being the melodramatic emo disaster bi icon we don't deserve.
Who else fights a guy in someone's freshly dug grave? Dumbass.
Spends a whole scene saying he will avenge his father by everything he stands for then proceeds to do nothing at all except being melodramatic for the rest of the time. What a guy. Love it.
I guess the Art is lost on me but I had an amazing time. Thanks Mr. Shaggy Pear

Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott

I really wanted to give it more stars, as the majority of the book was quite nice, but the last third just killed it for me. Such overly dramatic teen things. :(
No Longer Human by Junji Ito

Yozo, you're PRIME human. The fact that you can wonder about what makes people human makes you human!
High key depression, high key hashtag issues. I get the appeal of this, as it's just so... honest, in a way. A semi-biographic shishôsetsu, not leaving out any ugly parts. But I'm struck by just how much of a bad influence this could be on young people who are still forming their own ways of thought. Don't let kids read this book about depression and addiction, unless it's paired with discussions.
I appreciate this piece for its value - but that doesn't mean it was fun to read. It was a painful read, a horribly negative time of being stuck in Yozo's head and that's what influenced the score.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
4.0
Bought on a whim after wanting it for months, binge-read it to avoid responsibilities and just experience another world and life that is not mine. Absolutely accomplished that goal.
This was good. I've only known Rhy for 2 days but if anything (worse) happened to him I'd kill everyone in the room and then myself.
Lila was good, a thief with a VERY hidden good heart. Kell is good, a rare magic user with a bit of a family and self-complex who has to think about what magic actually is. Holland was good, a twisted one. And I loved the concept of Astrid and Athos, sadistic SUPER white twins. Like I could SEE the drained colors in front of my eyes, their dark veins on their paper-white skin.
I liked it. Really I have no critical thoughts on this except that SOMETHING was missing for me to be an absolute masterpiece. Maybe the next 2 books in this series will do that for me, we will see. It was a very solid darker fantasy read and I'm ordering the sequels as we speak.
Ah, actually, the setting. Why did it have to be London? Why do all the currently popular series have to be set in fantasy London? What is it about that city? I'm bored, but of the general trend, not of this depiction in particular.

Drachenbrut by Naomi Novik

SEHR langatmig.
Ungereimtheiten etc.

The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity by Carlo M. Cipolla

Human stupidity, explained in a pseudo-academic way full of humor and yet parts of truth. I feel like I understand humanity a bit more now.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

This wasn't unreadable. For a YA thriller it was pretty good. I liked the charactees, I even liked the murderer and second-hand murderer but the dog died so what's the point. I just skimmed past the point the dog died because I lost any and all interest. How dare
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

I LOVED THIS. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT TWO PARTS, GOSH. It's been a while since a book had me SO interested. I loved Jude, she was such a strong protagonist. So aware of her own mortality, striving to overcome it and always, always making the best out of her situations, never standing still. She's truly amazing. I loved how much she hated Cardan and his group, how she killed despite people telling ber she can't, how she does intrigue and plays people. It doesn't always work out but she tries so hard.
Cardan is a jerk. He's cruel, he's borderline evil, and sure he has tragedy and drama in his own story but he's still a jerk. But he's so entertaining. I love him.
I don't know, friends, everything about the relationships and dynamics felt so... varied? Real? There's no ~real love~, no ~real hate~, they all have nuances. Conflicting feelings. Love-hate, hate-love, trust and distrust. Ahhh, it was so refreshing. I could predict almost everything in this book, it's YA after all, but it didn't bother me in the LEAST. I loved it, seriously.
