I DNFED this book only 6% in because there’s just so much unnecessary racism and a random SA scene?? So knowing that this book was published in the 80s and written by a white man I expected some racist undertones when Jolene was introduced as “the black one”. But omg for starters, if this takes place in Kentucky and Jolene is pretty much the only black girl in the orphanage why does she talk like that? Second why does Jolene molest Beth??!! The scene comes out of nowhere and considering that Beth is only 8 and Jolene is 12 it’s just so weird knowing that a grown man wrote this. Since I was so weirded out by that I skipped the page and glimpsed at page 17 just to see the n word with the hard er thrown into Beth’s dialogue. I was planning on enjoying this book since I started the Netflix adaptation and loved it so far, but stuff like that randomly being slapped onto the page really makes me regret buying this book.
