Cute little read, had me laughing more than anything else. The main character had a charm to her but her naïveté definitely got on my nerves now and then. Loved the Grimm inspiration, and had such a good ending!

This book broke me and then broke me again. Rarely do I approach  the end of a series and cry simply because I do not want it to end. I don’t think I will ever find a series with prose so incredibly written, characters and a world so complex and intricate, and stakes so unfathomably high—yet within the grasp of a mother and daughter’s respective wills. It is both a profound tragedy and an important, necessary story about found family, systemic oppression, generational trauma, and the power of resolve.

At first, I struggled with this book. But this is truly one of the best and most unique novels I’ve ever read. A must-read for fantasy lovers.
It is an incredible story that thrusts you into the raw and grim life of the Stillness, and the many peoples who fight to survive within it. When readers preface this book (and the trilogy as a whole) with “It’s hard to describe what this book is about because everything is a spoiler!” They truly mean it. Every development of the story is a twist or reveal that had my jaw on the floor.

A dark conclusion to a dark series. Really opened my eyes to the trope of platonic soulmates—Rin and Kitay’s relationship was incredible to read.
The only issues I had with this book was that there were points where Kuang was repetitive with words or phrasing, as if she forgot she used them the first time (and these instances were obvious, such as the phrase “he shot her a wry look” being used twice on the same page and never used otherwise). Other than the few tiny errors that likely boiled down to slight misreads from the editor, the book and series as a whole was excellent.
