Did not finish book. Stopped at 24%.
It's just so slow. The book has many characters that Sound interesting but bc there are so many it feels unfocused at times. Definitely a slow burn kind of novel. I thought the writing style was kind of charming but sometimes it doesn't feel like it flows perfectly with the story, what with the it calling out the "reader" sometimes

Fascinating story about generational trauma and how far a person is willing to go even after losing a lost love. I find it fascinating how the main antagonist of the novel was the first victim of the first generation, then sought to recreate his trauma through the second generation, especially since they barely know him. I think it's so wonderful that he's consumed by revenge and can never move on. He's using the children of his enemies as proxy for the recreation of his own corruption of person and loss of innocence, and exactly one person wept at his grave-- it's stellar. Despite having a classical style, it's not too hard to read, and has detailed and vivid descriptions.
Can't tell if Heathcliff would've been better or worse if he'd married Cathy.
