This book scared me. Like really really scared me. When I first started reading this book I was not sure what was happening. This girl is talking about red uniforms and life where she (they) is not supposed to talk to anyone. Literally. They are no friendships and if you are try to talk back or have friends or something like that they punish. And the girl who is narrating talks about the time she was smoking, working, partying and having a life like any regular females and then she talks about the life she is right now in.

While I was reading this book I was so disturbed that I wanted to stop reading but I wanted to know what happened. And then Atwood started explaining what happened and goddammit. This book made me realise that whatever so called freedom we have is because someone chose to give us. In this book she so nicely explained how it can be done.

She had a life with a husband and a child and then the husband and the child has Ben taken away from her and she is living in a house where she is handmaid who is under deep scrutiny of various people. She can't show her face to anyone. She can't talk to anyone. And she is supposed to have intercourse with the man of the house in front of his wife so that the handmaid can carry a child FOR THE WIFE. My god this book made me depressed. But still a very very good book.
