Ooga booga spooky wooky, monster made by a weirdo man, then he goes loopy
Just for the record, I rate this book three stars as a positive review, not a negative one. 3 stars for me is a neutral rating. I really enjoyed the survival aspect of this book, and often thought to myself “I would be dead so quick” in those harsh conditions Jess faces. It is also exciting to see a disabled main character, as it added more to her story and her struggles surviving in the woods.
I am not a person who likes romance novels so this really hit the nail on the head, as there is NO ROMANCE throughout the whole book. It was a girl and her adorable yet loyal dog, and that’s all I needed. Also the forest critters.
The main reasons that stopped me from rating this book 4 stars (which I was going to initially) was the underlying backstory of the main character father’s history. I felt it was very vague, and even the explanation at the end left some questions unanswered for me. I wish it was fleshed out more than it was, because it really had potential.

You cannot tell a effective and good story about race and the struggles of systemic racism through the eyes of a white character, especially a white child. It just infantilizes those who see racism but does nothing about it. This book is the only comfortable race book that the US education system pushes because it keeps white people comfortable.
Dorian Grey is the epitome of a rich boy who complains about doing the bare minimum with anything. I was going to rate it 2 stars but I was very happy with the ending, which made me bump it up one star lol
