I wanted to like this book, really I did. Having heard so many good things about Kathe Koja's debut novel, I decided that the time I found out what the fuss was all about was long overdue. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work for me. Something never quite gelled. Perhaps it was the disjointed feel of the stream-of-consciousness prose that just didn't seem to come together, meaning that the story didn't quite sit comfortably, for me at least, whether intentional or not.

I believe the phrase to use here is 'sucker-punched.'

Following the slow burn of the opening chapters, I was led to believe that I was reading a standard haunted house story when, around the halfway point, things took a sharp left turn into far more grotesque, disturbing territory. Yep, blindsided.

Short and to the point, 'Scratches' isn't without its flaws, but as an assured debut, it promises of great things to come and marks Joshua Marsella as one to watch out for in the future.
