lefttoread's Reviews (532)
I usually bullet point the strengths and weaknesses in a story but I feel like I can't do this here. Kindred is phenomenal, and I'm not sure my review will do it justice.
I learnt things from reading this, important things that I am grateful for. We follow a Black woman from the 70's experiencing slavery for the first time and that prospect alone was chilling. On top of that, we get an unlikely relationship, feelings of empathy and trust, then hurt and betrayal.
"I never realised how easily people could be trained to accept slavery."
I don't think this book was explosive, it was a quiet book with a whole lot of impact. Kindred was first released in 1979, it's full of conversations on race, history and equality yet it was an easy read and one that I would definitely recommend picking up.
"That disturbed me too when I thought about it. How easily we seemed to acclimatise."
I'll definitely be checking out more of Octavia's work.

Are you kidding me? That was such a fun audio experience!! And that epilogue
For entertainment purposes and Lana & Logen's relationship, I enjoyed it.
On the other hand, in one book, Lana isn't as badass anymore, she seems to have forgotten how to be smart, all her kills have been thoroughly thought out, she's been so patient and now 2 books in she's forgetting to cover her tracks?
The clearing of the evidence at the crime scene she did well, but she did everything that would tie the murders back to her hometown and put her in jeopardy.
Also, that ending?! I thought Logan wouldn't let her out of his sight until she had police protection set up?? Yet she went home, with none?
On top of that, she heard music playing in her house, and she's like "oh I must have left it on" , I don't believe for one second, someone as cautious as Lana, knowing she's on this murderers radar would have not found that suspicious, when at any other point she's got a knife at the ready.
Hopefully, this series picks back up in the third, but I'm worried.

This was so much better than book 2, nearly another 5 star, to be honest! It also cleared something up from book 2 that I was doubting, so I'm happy about that.
This series is perfect for me, it's so clever, and it's got me hooked! Some of my favourite characters, too. I just don't know how the hell this is all going to pan out!! I'm scared.
S.T. Abby is also going to get me reading some real classic literature if she keeps adding these bagass quotes!!

It wasn't bad... The writing was the best thing about this book. It's a good grief story, but I wouldn't categorise this as horror, and I was left feeling meh about it.
I feel like Volume 2 is technically better than volume 1, but I personally enjoyed the first more than the second. That being said, Volume 2 was still very enjoyable!
Tite Kudo really had me feeling emotional over a parakeet in such a short amount of time.
My favourite characters so far are Chad & Rukia.

Unfortunately, this was a let down compared to the first 3, mainly because of the focus on Don Kanonji, please tell me he's not a reccuring character because he is sooo annoying. Once he wasn't the focus, it became really enjoyable again, I really liked the ending, and I'm intrigued by the new character!
