The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan
3.0
I learned some interesting things. The book felt a tad focused on him and his thoughts on the subjects. His feelings about the GMO potatoes and decision that he couldn't eat them or serve them to anyone was interesting. Very disturbing that said potatoes are classified as a pesticide and EPA jurisdiction not the USDA.
The House I Loved by Tatiana de Rosnay

I did not understand her need to go down with the house. In fact I didn't understand the writing of her life story and confession when she knew no one would ever read it. So the vehicle of the story telling was a contrivance to me. The historical time of the book was mildly interesting.
Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez
4.0
I am a fan of Alvarez, and this book was not a disappointment. It is aimed at YA, but I did not find it boring or too simple. It's told from the view point of a twelve year old girl, her changing from child to adolescent. Her life changes from simple and carefree to complicated. We hear about things girls her age think about against the background of the Dominican Republic in the 1960s.
The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy

A man can be contrary and follow his emotions doing wrong and knowing it and despising himself, and still be loved.
The Doctor's Wife by Elizabeth Brundage

suspenseful and engaging. I did not like that the sex between the wife and the artist was the no means yes type. she would protest and he would keep on with the seduction until she gave in, that is creepy and wrong even in a novel. the character of the artists wife was well developed with her devolving over time.
