This was a quick read that was fun. It was a mix of character and plot. The most character development was the boy, Waylon. I find his character to be the most fleshed out. I enjoyed this for a short creature horror book. If you get grossed out easily by graphic scenes in horror then maybe skip this one. This did have a bit of backstory on what the paranormal creature was that I found interesting. It added to the story.
I could have done without the little bit of political side plot with the mayor and sheriff… there was very little of it to begin with and I felt like it could have been left out since the author slipped in news reports via news show and/or social media posts.
Overall, it was a fast read that I liked from its creepy atmosphere and shock.

I enjoyed this. It was unique and original in the way the story unfolded. I don’t want to say too much because I think this is the type of book that needs to be read with as little background information as possible. I will say that the beginnii I my was slow for me but then picked up and kept me engaged.

Does not get into the politics and plot enough. Too much meandering.

This was a phenomenal read. The story telling was intriguing and kept me wanting to know where it was all leading up until that earth shattering conclusion. This isn’ta five star only because it did take a while to get the story fully moving, but once all the perspectives had been introduced and the wheels set in motion, I was fully engaged.
This was such an original take on magical books, the people who can hear and perform the spells, and the scribes who writes the magic. It is also about how too much power can cause others to be in danger. But then how that power can ultimately turn into hands that are fair and just, hands that are far more caring than the ones it had spent many years in. How the tables can turn in a single moment for the better.

Just not in the mood. It’s taking too long to get into the meat of the story for me.
