Darth Plagueis by James Luceno

one of the joys of coming back to rereading legends is seeing how neat it all ties together, and how neat it seems, especially in comparison to the new canon. while not as much of a favourite as the darth bane trilogy, or the death star novel, the sith are, and always have been, so much more interesting to read about than the jedi. give me plotting in the shadows, fucking shit up in secret, hiding rather than "oh look at us, we're gonna remain stagnant busybodies with a superiority complex for the entire time of our existence".
Rocky by James Leighton

being from 1997, i have no memories of rocky as a player or a person, merely as a cultural facet of being an arsenal fan. this was an insightful read, however, and this could be due to the way the book was organised or indeed, the speed from diagnosis to passing, it would have been interesting to see more in that year of life, or indeed, the enduring image of rocky amongst arsenal fans today.
Children of Dune by Frank Herbert

i think at this point you cant not have frank herbert in the dream blunt rotation
The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner: A Memoir by Grace Tame
5.0
a different style of memoir to what would be usually expected I suppose. no raging polemic (but rage nonetheless), but no shying away from the issue. I'll be honest, I didn't know much about tame before her win and photo op with Scotty from marketing, and in a way, I'm glad I was able to fill in the blanks from such an authentic voice

"A man can lose himself on the path, if he wants to. Sometimes losing yourself is the only way to find out who you are"
Claire North is such a brilliant talent, I can't believe it's taken me this long to read another one of her books. Then again, I suppose it wasn't the time for me to read until now, and given everything that's happened, that definitely checks out.
"You must choose the life you live at the time you live it, Charlie". I suppose this is now the time to choose my life as I live it. Let's see where this path goes, hey?

i started watching attack on titan in sutherland library of all places during high school. i think i was 15 or 16, and had all these outlandish theories after finishing the first season in a very short amount of time. while the reiner and bertholdt reveals were spoiled by me googling the armoured and colossal titans back then, i stuck to my guns and wanted to watch it as an anime fan only first. over the years there's been chapters that i've seen, such as zeke's final transformation of eldians, parts of the warhammer titan fight, and the second last chapter. without the wider context, i didn't have much understanding of what was going on, and had plenty of opportunities to go and seek out the manga if i wanted to. i managed to get to the finale only knowing the controversy surrounding the final chapter without any of the specifics. having now finished both the anime version and now the manga version, i think combined as one entity it's realistically the only ending that attack on titan could have had. there was always going to be a fixed point, and while it would be nice for that fixed point to be averted, which would have made the ending more run of the mill, but by not shying away from it, it makes attack on titan remain the formative and iconic story that it is. how much isayama knew from time of creation to the ending i don't know, nor do i really want or need to know.
