This was a frustrating read—the author’s essay at the end of the book about how she wrote it made me enjoy it more. The Ghanian setting and the main character’s story of understanding her own worth apart from a man were compelling. I also appreciated Evelyn’s character and her emotional honesty at the end.

This book feels like it told the truth about the realities of life—more specifically adulthood. When work becomes more mundane. Death becomes more common. And the questions get bigger and more difficult to face. And you look across the room at your family holding everything that’s shaped you all along the way.

This book left me catching my breath after. A wide array of characters, but really it’s the story of siblings and their unrelenting love for one another. And giving one another the freedom to be themselves.
