From this book, Atwood has become my new favourite author and I am halfway through Alias Grace.
The Handmaid's Tale is set in a patriarchal dystopian future where women are nothing more than breeding machines or slaves or wives and all are miserable.
There are strange rituals in the book, which are scary and dark, but you can't stop reading.
The narrator is easy to relate to and she tells her story with honest bravery.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
SPOILER ALERT
The ending was unexpected with the Gilead discussion by researchers and professors. I thought this separated this book from other books of the same genre and gave it a hope that the handmaid herself couldn't give.

Read at college. I think I would have been able to better appreciate this novel had I been a little older as in hindsight, I find this book to be a masterpiece, but at the time it was a chore to read thus the four and not five stars.
The struggles of daily life are sometimes difficult to read, but you don't stop because you know it's important.
It is not one for younger readers and should be read quickly so as not to consume you.

Loved loved loved this book. I am not ashamed to say it even though it has become 'pop literature' and also made into a film, which I loved too.
A period in American history which never fails to astonish and fascinate me. I will never understand why these people were treated so badly, but their success, despite the odds, is tear jerking and makes a beautiful story.
I will be reading this again and I always look to read more in this genre.

Read for college.
Hated it to begin with, for a long time. I finally forced myself to finish the novel and the ending was magnificent, and while I don't remember it exactly, I remember the feeling of wanted to eat the words as I was reading them so as to enjoy it for longer.
I don't really recommend this book, but if you are forced to read it, hang in there!

I read the first two novels aloud to my husband while in bed and it became our nightly routine. Loved the thrill of the fantasy and the characters and every little thing had been thought out. Love the fact that the main character is a little girl.
Having said all of this, I feel nothing compelling me to finish the series and I have not done so even though I finished the first two books over three years ago... I wouldn't criticise the books though, as this is a long way out of my preferred reading.

Beautiful novel.
Circus, hard times, love and destruction. A perfectly crafted and paced novel.

I didn't really understand this when I read it, but I enjoyed the long-way-off-fullness of it. It is dreamy and innocent and naïve and there are possibilities between the lines, which are not fully explored and this makes for the best writing.
I have given it three stars because it did not feel a full novel to me and I would not read it again, which is always a mark of a mediocre novel.
Not my cup of tea...

Beautiful.
I don't need to say anymore. It's all be said and by people far more eloquent than I.

Great fun.
You'll read it quickly and love every word.
Terribly British and gorgeously naughty.
