This book definitely kept me turning the page and wondering what the truth was. There were certain points, though, where I felt like "I'm sorry, I'm supposed to believe that X resulted in Y? That doesn't make sense at all."
But like I said, it was a page turner! I couldn't wait to find out what happened even if I was a little frustrated at times.

A friend asked me if I could compare it to anything else and I could only come up with, "It's like if 'The Hate U Give' had a baby with 'High Fidelity'." In reality, it's not like anything else at all.
I loved the way this book told the intertwining stories of several different characters--shows how we affect one another in glorious, special, and sometimes even heartbreaking ways.
It's a coming of age story told from the zoomed out perspective of adulthood. It's not giving anything away to say that this is the story of two star-crossed lovers but it's no romance. It's not even a love story. That's just the fact of it. We follow these two as they live their way towards and away from one another as young-love is wont to do.

I was obsessed with this book from start to finish. The unique format made it easy to imagine myself in the moment—picturing everything. My only regret is that this book was fiction. I kept finding myself wanting to Google the band. I wanted to hear the songs, see the album artwork. I truly loved this book.
Jacqueline Woodson has, long ago, established herself as a master at both poetry and prose. The way she turns a phrase is enough to knock the wind out of you.
I thought the way that she chose to tell this story was thoughtful and really impressive--and even still it read a little bit like a first draft to me. I wanted it to be longer, jucier, more full. I was left feeling like I knew just the tiniest whisps of these people which, in retrospect, was maybe intentional?

This definitely read more self-help to me rather than the memoir I was expecting--which is fine! I love Karen's chapters the very best. Especially about being a latchkey kid. Oh, that resonated.
TBH it did feel a little disjointed to me but nonetheless, it was still full of some really great insights and it made for a fun discussion with my friends.

I picked up Girls Like Us knowing exactly nothing about it and I was swiftly wrapped up into a world that felt so real and so true--probably because it doesn't stray too far from the very real history of women and femmes in our not too distant past.
Girls Like Us tells a delicious story of friendship and family in the face of life-altering circumstances--making the case for Choice using the nuance that is due to the conversation. I'm going to recommend this book to so many young people in my life.
