What an amazingly written book about one of the most chilling murderers/rapists/monsters who ever lived. The author captured his psychopathically weird joy about his crimes and it was a quick and compelling read. True crime lovers will like this book.
3.5. I thought this book was heartfelt and interesting. His mother seemed to be an inspiring, strong woman and what a better way to face a grim diagnosis than to take an opportunity to create a book club in order to talk about life and books. Even though you knew how the book would end up, you still felt optimistic throughout the whole story, since it wasn't written to be a downer.
It truly shows the power of books and how they can bring us together. I'm sure his mother was looking down on him and happy to have their story out there like this.

I've already read "I'll Be Gone in the Dark," and listen to "The Murder Squad" podcast with Jensen and Holes, where the same cases are ones mentioned in the book. What I didn't know were all the details of cases Jensen has solved already. His writing is captivating and although I knew some details of some of the cases he discussed, I still found myself repeating "Just one more chapter."
I have immense respect for Jensen and what he chose to devote his life to. Someone who truly believes he can make a difference, if he just dares to try. One of the best true crime reads since "IBGITD."

I read this book in Jonathan Van Ness' voice. I loved his story because it demonstrates resilience, the power of self-love, and the non-linear journey it takes to get there. A definite 180 from Tan France's book--but in a good way. He really does love figure skating, which I figured from his Instagram, but really understood how much after reading his book.
I like the overall story and message of this book. I did find the switching between time and people's narratives a bit confusing at times. But I could feel the story and its impact.
What an amazing, moving story about generations of women and the trauma, hardships, and triumphs they go through. I found Jo's story so relatable in the way that you can pretend to be happy and go along with what you "should" do because you think it'll make everyone's lives-including your own-easier, but not necessarily better. I loved Bethie's story because we can all relate to feeling lost and directionless, until we eventually see the other side. And I loved how Jo's children's lives seemed to be better in the way all mothers want their children's lives to be.
tl;dr: I loved the saga of these women.

2.5. This book was recommended to me by a coworker. There were great nuggets of advice/truths in this book that I did highlight. However, I thought this was just a book about positivity and not a book about only achieving positivity by Christian means. Meaning, every suggestion on how to be positive was to use the bible etc. For that reason, I just took forever to finish this book.
So interesting! I loved learning about the history of toxicology and how poisons helped establish it in one way or another. And the tie in with the criminal justice system. I also enjoyed the scientific descriptions of the poisons and how they work—but not in a creepy, threatening way, I promise.
Overall very interesting.

Wow, wow, wow. This book cracked me open. Made me realize the heaviness I carry around and how it's ok to feel it, move through it, and come out the other side. I'll carry her words and story around me for a while and the timing of life and reading this book couldn't have been more perfect. I have so much more I want to say, but somehow need to process it still.
Books like these hit you deeply, in the best way. All I can do is thank her for writing it, and I hope I get the chance when I see her in Chicago.

2.5. While this was a well-written book, I found my expectations were let down. I assumed it would be a book to help you get finances in order, but it was geared toward a younger audience (people just about to enter college). It was filled with a lot of information I already knew. But those were my own expectations and they didn't match what the book actually is. But, it was a well written book and entertaining. The low rating is due to what I said above.
