i knew i'd love this based on the fact that emily henry trusted her to adapt TWO of her books to the screen.

this is real, funny, heartwarming, sad, hopeful, and swoony, and everything i love about romance. the characters are real, the problems they go through are too, and i like that the miscommunication/main point of the novel isn't malicious or traumatic or out of left field.

the only thing i'll say is the ending came too quickly for my taste.

coming back 10 days later & i don't know if i can say why i loved and enjoyed this so much. morrison has a distinct and wonderful writing style that paints a picture of a vivid world with rich characters. the book really takes you on a journey of self discovery, a man reckoning with his upbringing, how he is how he is, and where he can go, getting to his roots, and trying to make peace with it all.

i also love the strong, but sometimes wild & crazy women in this story as well.

milkman goes on a quest for gold, but ends up finding something worth more. i feel like such a dummy trying to even describe the brilliance of this novel, so i'll stop before i put my foot in my mouth. glad to have picked this up and need to read more of her work.

i need this to sink in a bit before i review. but wow

wow. this book will have me thinking for a long time. this is a captivating story/thriller about true crime obsession, female friendship, and grief.

teddy and mickey, and the tertiary characters, are extremely interesting and off putting to a certain degree. you see a woman go from grieving her sister, who had disappeared 10 years ago, to grieving her dad who just died. as she sorts through his papers & affairs she finds out he might've been looking into her sister's disappearance. she gets deeper and deeper into the reddit boards, fan theories, and actually puts together a pepe silvia type board trying to connect the dots.

she meets mickey and everything gets tangled and she dives deeper and deeper into the madness. the friendship between those two becomes codependent and weird. mickey is her own brand of messed up. then she connects with bill. that relationship is also interesting.

when you
find out how mickey is connected to all of it you want to be like I KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP.
but what's so captivating about this story is how you see teddy go from a relatively normal grieving person to extremely obsessed and chasing leads and a story that takes her almost to the brink of insanity.  a real commentary on true crime fandoms & obsessions.

i loved how this was written and the tone and voice the author uses. i was hooked from the beginning and enjoyed this book. i hope she writes more.

if you like silvia moreno-garcia you will also enjoy this book. both have similar pacing, beautiful and detailed writing, captivating settings and characters, and important themes.

this is a thematically ambitious novel about sri lankan folklore, feminist rage, colonization, Proselytization (i kind of made that up but you know what i mean), and the supernatural.

this was beautifully written and i really felt like i was in the 19th century sri lankan jungle. i will say the book lost me pacing wise, but it was still written well enough for me to stay intrigued.

i sort of figured out what the mystery behind the attacks was part the way through but it was still ambiguous enough where you think you're wrong. it was wrapped up nicely yet quickly. overall a good book. i enjoyed the audiobook narrator's voice.

first dip back into dark romance & i couldn’t be happier i stopped reading it all. it’s bad. and this whole series is not the best out of the spin outs she has. and this was drawn out & a bit eye rolly in my opinion.

i really enjoyed this honest and unique memoir. susan lieu goes through her life trying to grapple with and process her mom's sudden death due to medical malpractice. a lesson in grief, healing, family, and the power of sharing your story. seeing how everyone in her family processed differently was nice and you could see how it kept her stuck in some parts. but by the end you could see the full circle healing she went through. not that you can ever truly get over a loss like this.

but this memoir was real, vulnerable, and honest, at times frustrating & triggering. i couldn't imagine my family shutting me down repeatedly and making comments about my body. it was also nice to get a glimpse into vietnamese culture and customs. i loved how it had a food focus too and showed the importance of that. her family is distant but welcoming yet warm.

i'm glad i got to read this memoir. highly recommend.

there was a lot to this book that made me think. crazy women living life. there were some campy elements to this in terms of the true crime obsession - it almost seemed like a parody. it’s all wrapped up in enid’s mind, disability, and view on life. it goes to show how mental illness & life’s experiences can warp reality.

but also shows there’s always a path to healing no matter how messy. there were a lot of interesting (pun intended heheh) quotes and tidbits from this book that i’ll think about for a while.

don’t get the audiobook — her voice sounds too cheery for the subject matter. but that’s my personal opinion.

the book is good, written well, and the characters are interesting. i just feel like not a lot happened for any reason. it’s just things going on & no learning or growth from it. it’s just continued stories.

it was written well and it had a good premise.
