this book is essential reading. especially for anyone living in the us who has a desire to dismantle the current oppressive system we’re all living under. some facts in here i sort of knew but it was nice (is that the right word?) to get a more in depth understanding of the issue.
i read this and got so angry that this is how society has progressed. i got angry that it’s extremely hard to change a corrupt & unfair system. & i got angry that those old white people in charge think this is what we want them to do as our elected officials. regan is the fucking worst and all those after him. especially the bits about obama because i still had some blinders on back then to some (not all) of the more sinister things he did — especially as it relates to the war on drugs. presidents are so sneaky and insidious.
anyways. a great book & a must read. first we must understand how this system works before we dismantle it and don’t create another caste system like it so our black and brown citizens can be truly free and treated like they deserve.
i do wish there was a more inclusive focus but i understand why she chose black men to center specifically.

wow. this has me feeling a lot.
i’ll say the first 25-30% was dense & difficult but necessary in terms of background knowledge. i didn’t realize there was glossary/character names in the back til i got to the end, since i read the ebook. but once you get past that, the story really picks up and then you have to know what’s going on and what’s going to happen.
i loved the characters - ead, sabran, & tané & the rest of them. you rooted for most of them, were suspicious of many. but overall great main characters & i can’t wait to see what happens to them next (although we might not find out for a long, long time considering we’ve gotten one prequel & are getting another prequel. sigh).
this was a labor of love & read over many cardio sessions at the gym, on the couch, & various other places. and i love sapphic high fantasy! pirates! i think id benefit from rereading — especially the beginning bits — but overall a great ride.

after reading homegoing i was more excited to read this one and what a different book and experience in the best way. as many other people have said, it's amazing to see the difference in her two books - in the most complimentary way.
there are no words to describe how sharp and beautiful her writing is. parts really make you think and it's so impactful. so much to unpack with this story and how complex it is.
i can't sing enough praises about it, so i'll just tell you to read it instead. a moving story about a woman trying to pursue her ideas & passion, while dealing with grief from losing a brother & her mom having severe depression and reckoning with that and her religious upbringing and how to move forward.
just a great book.

honestly, what an amazing conclusion to this story. i'm sad it's over. i loved these characters & this world. towards the halfway/75% mark, i knew what would happen to solve the main issue, but it was still good.
this book was just as poetic and wonderfully written, magical, and exciting as the first installment. i thought the symmetry of letters at the beginning could be repetitive or full circle and i'm glad it didn't feel repetitive and there was a clever spin on it.
this book doesn't feel ya - besides the lack of spice, which i think is 1000000% okay & the only reason (besides their ages, maybe?) it's ya - because the emotional connection the characters share, the gravity of what they're going through, & how they handle the events are nothing juvenile & annoying.
sabotage, subterfuge, and perseverance.
i really hope this author writes more and writes an adult series because i will also be reading. overall, a wonderful conclusion to roman & iris' story.

ahhhh, i don't want this re-read to end. they keep getting better - as if it's even possible to constantly get better. the plot is amazing, the hijinx are high, treachery and stealth modes activated, etc. etc. a to of familiar characters & a couple new all coming together to bring the series of unfortunate events to an end.
so many important messages in this one too. i just love.

i have a lot of feelings about this book. i think this is beautifully written, tackles a lot of issues, and is an interesting read. the incest was difficult and i don’t think necessary. there could’ve been some way to tell this story just as effectively without it.
that being said, i think what this story does and is saying is important and heartbreaking and relevant.
the incest just reallllly is so unnecessary and problematic considering all the homophobia/transphobia in the world. but maybe that’s just a cultural thing from the story’s setting.

i really loved the first book in this series and didn't realize the second one had released until i saw it on libby & i'm glad i checked it out. this was a great follow up where we get to see andy solve crime, become a part of his community, make up for past wrongs, and put old flames to rest so he can have new ones.
the setting is what makes this book so great - yet also a little sad considering the time frame and where lgbtq people were then. not that we don't have our issues now. but the crime in this one is standard crime without being cliche or boring. it's got good details and at no point did i guess involvement or who was who.
i love the characters and love the detective work here. absolutely can't wait for the next installment.
also a side note: the audiobook is great. the narrator definitely sounded like he was a voice actor from bob's burgers - although a google search tells me he is not.
