I whisper-screamed at 2 am for two days straight, and for that reason alone, I'm giving this 4.5 🌟

This book isn't perfect. Far from it, even. However, the internal turmoil within the main character and the depths given to each interpersonal relationship she has is impressive. I found myself empathic in more ways than one, and not just toward the main character but also her family and friend (yes, singular).

This book could've been better if Mallory had better judgement. Don't get me wrong, even though her choices are justified by her past and I get the way she thinks, I myself think like her at times (well, more than 'at times'), her decisions come across as immature and unthought. Despite her being in her head a lot, not much comes out of it. The answers to her problems are so evident, and yet she never seems to be able to find them. She just seems daft at times, that's all.

But all in all, this book made me giggle, shriek, and even gasp. I'm a chess fan and always have been so ofc I might be biased when I say that this book was <i> ENTERTAINING</i>! Yes, folks, you heard me correctly. This book was SO MUCH FUN. I mean, I can't even remember the last time I had this much fun with a book.

You should read it. :)

the first half made me hope i'd finally like a booktok book but then... then... <b>the dragons entered the chat. </b>

I mean what in the world???? The author built them up to be these terrifying beasts that cannot be bound by humans and then our MC gets to be a sarcastic ass to her dragon (yes, they communicate through thoughts <s>and yes it's freakish given that <i>NOTHING</i> is kept private</s>) To me the dragons came across as pets and not obliterating creatures capable of crushing a human with just one misstep.

Also, the MC was insufferable. The set-up, her motivation and her resolve is all but volatile. There's <i>nothing</i> keeping her from what she wants. Frequently options are presented to her, and despite having what she desires most on the table right under her nose, like the masochist she is, she'll chose to ignore it and keep struggling in the rider's quadrant.

Anyways let me explain the situation real quick before i go on in detail.

Our FMC is the daughter of a famous dragon rider and is forced into the rider's quadrant 'exam' (if you can call it that. it's more of a trial). Despite her burning desire to become a scribe, she is thrust into danger and has no choice but to try and survive in the rider's quadrant. But when the option to LEAVE is in front of her she steps away!!! And keep in mind this is WAYYY before she has her whole arc, this is the first 10% (not even)!!

The inconsistency of her whole character grated me. Oh and don't get me started on her <s>love-interest</s> i mean enemy (ahem ahem). The man is a low-budget Rhysand if i've ever encountered one. I mean it's laughable really, the way he's both self-pitying while being overbearing.
One character in particular is HATED for wanting Violet safe since...
Violet wants freedom.
Violet wants to make her own choices.
Violet wants to be able to stand on her <i>own</i> two feet.
AND YET, when Xander- yes that's his name, no i'm not joking- does it, it's romantic?!!

Although the first half is addictive. A real page-turner until the dragons came into the picture and ruined my whole experience. If only they were better written.

I'm done. I don't recommend this to any fantasy readers ut if you're a romance reader wanting to venture into fantasy then why not. But keep in mind this isn't fantasy. This is a a romance with a fantasy backdrop.

this is emotional but not to the extreme
I was forced to read this book for the British Council but I ended up liking it a lot !!!!
this story is about a boy named Cameron he is a African-American and he has heart problems ... I think he has 1 month or 2 to live before his heart stops working . BUT one day his father contacts a doctor that can help him but it will be risky ... and so this story follows Cameron and his decisions to become healthy again!

sorry if the review is rubbish i'm new and I don't actually know how to review so... yeah
