The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

agree with many of the other reviews that I felt disconnected from the characters and story and it felt emotionally flat. Would recommend it and can see that that his writing style worked for a lot of other readers.

Ok so I really wanted to dislike this book more. What she accomplishes here with her writing is pure magic. The form, the pacing, the vividness and breadth amidst the minimalism. But why, oh why would a british woman take on writing about the American west and promote a world view which stereotypes indigenous peoples as "savages." Calling the first nations character "Old Woman From a Distance" seemed so disrespectful. I just didn't get the appeal for her. What a waste of incredible writing.

Ok, so I really wanted to like this more than I did. the cover art is incredible and the concept of bison heist as activism is genius. But I thought the writing was very weak and uninteresting, from the sentence level to the larger narrative, and it really took me out of the experience.

the gayest, drunkest, most fever dreamiest sailor story since The Lighthouse. felt as brain-damaged and hungover as mcGlue while reading and never wanted the madness to end.
