Boy parts was a good novel, however this adaptation isn’t. Compressing the original material (which is crazy itself, because you gave up on all the nuance of the story) was already bad but this being a one person show I think made it even worse.
How was it possible to hold so much desire and so much fear in the same body?
Zara is the most unreliable of narrators which is quite fun to read, until you highkey start going crazy at her gaslighting her own thoughts and behaviours. This was v enjoyable, and while the story had some interesting choices, reading this was fun, the descriptions are so immersive and suffocating that you will feel like you’re locked in a soundproof, seven-bedrooms house in the East Hamptons too.

The reason magical girls exist is because they needed their power the most. In other words, before a magical girl awakens her powers, she’s the weakest person in the world.
I loved this, the way the entire magical girl thing was incorporated into a reality we live in, the exploration of why does magic pick almost only girls, a question the protagonist herself had, and how being magical doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be “good”. Such a short book but it’s such a gem.
Ps. I really lover the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, I think they were such a good edition.
