The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell

This small book really packed a punch. 60 years of family secrets finally come to a head. It was worth the $3 I paid on the Barnes and Noble discount fiction shelf!!
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

An extraordinary, but fatal tale of an arrogant, ill-prepared, young man who thought who could survive in the Alaskan "out-back" without a plan. Thought Krakauer, the author, used McCandless's story as an inappropirate vehicle to vex some of his own demons...but a good read. Makes me like the warmth and comfort of my own home even better!

Re-reading for Read with the Rep. I think I like this book more the second time around. I really like this author. Plan on reading more of her stuff.

Although at times, I felt like I was drudging along in the mud with the movement of the Union troops, this novel was so gorgeously written and reminiscent of a 19th century novel. I great compliment to Little Women.
The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr

I think I would have been better served by reading an actual Sherlock Holmes novel. This was inconsistant and melodramatic.

If Shakespeare had been born in racially divided, post WWII Mississippi, he would have written a tragedy like this. Highly recommended.
The Dog of the South by Charles Portis

Am I the only one that didn't "get" the humor of this book?? I couldn't wait until it was OVER.
Daughter of the Hills: A Woman's Part in the Coal Miners' Struggle by Myra Page

A heart-wrenching tale of the life a coal-mining family. The feeling of helplessness and tragedy mixed with joy of family life was beautifully told from the voice of Dolly Hawkins Cooper, a real life coalmining wife.
