I have to admit, this book surprised me. I had a LOT of fun. It's sweet and adventurous and so funny. Like I could not stop laughing - so much was hilarious but then two pages later you'd be crying. Dead dads and brothers, extreme sadness and grief mixed with joy and fear. This is like a Eat Pray Love but in the wilderness and with a hot man who is actually not an adventure guide. The side thief/diamond plotline was SO FUN and really added a lot of momentum to the story. I really had fun with this book!
Wow I am so disappointed in this book especially after loving Leave the World Behind. I’ve seen reviews saying that “nothing happens” which usually doesn’t bother me as SOME thing must happen (a la Come and Get it). My critique is less that nothing happened and more that I’m not sure if I’m supposed to FEEL anything for these characters. Brooke’s quick descent into entitlement and madness was alluring for sure. But she never felt three dimensional. Asher and Kim and Maggie and Malcolm all just felt there.
This is a deep dive into race and class, adoption and generational wealth. I get that for sure. But I don’t think it was successful at really questioning any of these things.
I did enjoy the ending. It felt like we were seeing Brooke peel apart page my page. But why??? That I am still not sure of.
It’s hard to rate this book because it’s so weird and quite confusing. The world is SO interesting like I was immediately interested even while being so confused. The gods and mythology Hall created was fascinating. I loved Karys and Ferain - their relationship as bound companions and how they learned about each other made you fall in love with them.
The ending left me wanting more. I need more. This can’t be the end.
Absolutely loved this book. Lucy Eden wrote a complex romance with serious themes that will make you laugh out loud. The twist and secrets are really fun to uncover and there is a depth to this that h loved. A must read!
This book blew me away. It’s dark academia and creepy fungi and unrealizable narrators and hot swoony but mysteriously creepy doctors. There is power imbalance and murder and it’s so freaking creepy.
I truly don't know what to say about this book. It's unbelievably inventive and I haven't stopped thinking about it. Alexis writes from the heart. She writes from a deep and twisted place that brings books that will challenge you and your way of thinking. The depth of this book, what it means to persuade someone; what it means to own someone's body and mind and how doing that could corrupt. Absolutely power corrupts absolutely. This book is so traumatic and messed up and I loved every second of it. You are in for a ride.
