“I clenched my teeth and fists to stop them biting and scratching these clever men who want no care for the helpless sick small, who use religions and politics to stay comfortably superior to all that pain: who make religions and politics, excuses to spread misery with fire and sword and how could I stop all this? I did not know what to do.”

Well, that was entertaining. At first, I was confused when Gray claimed that this book is not fiction but an autobiography. Took it with a grain of salt and pushed on. Bella's obsession with synonyms is probably my favourite part. On the other hand, it is unsettling to read about her sexcapades with Wedderburn when she only has a brain of a toddler. However, I liked that she knows that she can do whatever she wants with her body because it is her body after all. Overall, the book and the movie gave me an enjoyable experience.

"Have you not guessed it yet? I am not a place where nature can be weeded and tamed and kept in order. I am tree roots - and dark hollows - and ancient moss - and the cry of owls. I am not a thing that you can shape, not anymore. I am not garden, but the woods, and if you ever come near me again, every bit of wildness in me will rise up to bite you. I will tear your throat out with my teeth."

"What young brains lack in experience they sometimes make up for in idealism. Nothing seems impossible to them.”

I'm four years late because I can't keep up with the hype but now I made it! I think this prequel summarized the trilogy neatly, and I loved it for that. I enjoyed delving into Snow's thoughts and seeing that he's not inherently bad, but his obsession with being in control and self-serving choices contributed to what made him the evil President Snow. I wasn't a fan of the romance, but pubescent Snow's pining for the district girl Lucy Gray? Now, that's a treat.

My only complaint is the book's length; it's too long! It reads like a trilogy in one book.

Raw and brutal. As expected, lots of rape stories that halfway through, the stories started sounding the same. And the author has this love of starting a question with "dont you know?" to the point that different characters on different stories felt like a single character.

It was soooooooooo slow, my god. I enjoyed the scientific parts. The sexist parts however, were a bit tiresome. I appreciate Mary pushing back and challenging those men, especially her spineless husband, however, what did she actually achieved at the end? Just revenge then?
