The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
2.0
This book feels like a 2.5 to me. There was so much of the book that could have been spectacular, but I felt they weren't developed well. I think Harrow had very strong characterization and then abandoned that characterization in the final climax, leaving me feeling unsatisfied and angry. There were so many attempts at positive representation, yet there was flippant and unnecessary homophobia that, frankly, made me uncomfortable. This book also felt very anticlimactic with its pacing. The entire book was a rollercoaster of climatic moments (truly felt that the halfway point climax could have been the ending) and then the climax at the close of the novel was not as thrilling or exciting as some of the others throughout the book. There was also, a lot of fun plot points, but they felt very spoonfed. This book is marketed as adult fiction, but it reads like YA, and young YA at that. I couldn't do any critical thinking because as soon as I started putting clues together I was given the answer. Finally, I have some issues with the messaging in the novel. Witchcraft is inherently anti-societal as it was prosecuted heavily. Yet, the messaging feels capitalistic in nature which corresponds with societal messaging rather than working against it. The sisters learn the lesson that they must work towards a greater future for the following generation, thus sacrifing their happiness or selves for the cause. This feels like an "American Dream" type messaging where you toil under capitalism to make a better future for your kids and I feel that the messaging should have been more focused on fighting for personal happiness and the union of witches.

A recent re-read and honestly still so entertaining. Ivory is badass and Razvan is so down to earth, they really are an exemplary romance novel couple

A re-read review and honestly it holds up. This book really set some precedents in YA lit and for a reason. Thoroughly enjoyed!
