 It's okay?

It's not horrible, but once again, the writing is bad, the book is too short (can this even be considered a book?), and it's just all over the place.

 What in the-?

Okay, this is definitely a... Unique point of view. But still, the writing is just not good and it is obvious that it is self published. I'm sorry, but the writing is so bad, it's kind of like a man who wants to write from a woman's POV but is failing.

 Is that it?

It's one of the shortest books I've ever read. It's not horrible, but besides being almost criminally short, it introduces this world and doesn't give us enough time to figure it all out. Not enough information, it's pretty much just two steamy scenes with a tiny filler in-between.
It's almost enough to give it a one star, but I've read worse and I feel like this is still quite not this bad.

Am I... more twisted than I realized?

I don't know why I decided to read this book. Maybe because it said it was a Booktok favourite (though I haven't been on Tiktok in the past couple of years that intrigued me) or maybe because I was intrigued by how there could be a stalker romance, but once again, human imagination surprised me (after I read different monster, alien and whatever books I shouldn't have been, but here we are).

If nothing more, this book warns you how easy it can be to find someone online. I get that Josh is an incredibly talented hacker, but still. It opens your eyes as to just how much of our personal information we all give out online without giving it much thought.

For almost constant dark themes, there are a surprising amounts of light-hearted moments and my favourite, sarcastic remarks. I just love when the characters are witty and find humour even in the darkest moments, like when they just committed murder. Oops, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that. Major spoiler, or maybe not? It kind of fits to the overall theme.

Did I just find a new obsession, and it's stalker romance? I really shouldn't have, but I think I might need to get back to Booktok and see just how popular this book is. Who knows, maybe this time I'll stick around for longer.

If you're looking for an emotional rollercoaster, read this.

While I'm not normally the biggest fan of slow burn and such heavy, dark topics rolled into one, I am changing my mind because of this book. This book is DARK and features quite a few heavy themes, and it will not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you can, this is a worthy read to get through.

Both main characters have complex stories and personalities, really going for that 'nobody has it easy in life' approach. Ryan's character is so powerful even without saying a word. There are a few instances where I thought 'someone who went through what he did wouldn't behave like this' but then I shut up that judgy part of my brain because I know that everyone's response to trauma is different and everyone would behave differently in his place.

William has it all on the surface, but is, in fact, deeply depressed and unhappy with his life. There is an underlayer of guilt to everything he does, and he is almost as mysterious a character as Ryan is.

I do love that everything is gradually revealed step by step, chapter by chapter, giving us the opportunity to try and piece it all together, while holding onto the most important piece of the important until the last few chapters. I did figure out what was going on, but the author is really good and that didn't happen until just before the author themselves revealed it to us.

Long story short, if this isn't to your taste you have trigger warnings at the beginning of the book (I always skip those because I don't want to spoilt things for me, but to each their own). If you think you can handle it, please read this.

I just realized this will be a series and though this book only recently came out, I can't wait for the next one (even if it's not continuation or has nothing to do with these characters, I already know I will love it).

4.25

Would have rounded up, but I'd give it like 4.25 stars.

Unless you've read the book you won't get it when I say this but, it is at the same time too fast-paced and too slow-paced as a book. I get that this isn't real and something like this would never happen, but the way characters act should at least be believable. They way Delora and Magnus get together just makes no sense to me.

Also, while I simply ADORE that Delora is a curvy girl, and I do think representation is important, did the author have to make her this depressed? I'm a big girl myself and I'm not completely ambiguous toward life and hating the way I look and need a man to tell me I'm beautiful. Again, I understand that there would be a lot of women out there who find themselves in Delora, but the way she goes about life kind of ruined it for me.

I do think Magnus is a sweetheart, even if a bit clueless, but I suppose that's part of his charm.

4.5

Generous with rating, it's more like 4.5 stars.

It is definitely one of the more unique story ideas and I do like this world with demons and Duskwalkers - sorry, Mavka - and an almost post-apocalyptic world. For a book like this, though, I do feel like it stretches a bit too much and there could have been at least 100 pages less. After a while, you just want the story to get to the point. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE long books, but when it comes to a story like this, I don't necessarily enjoy when they're too long.

Also, it's a bit confusing which time period this is supposed to be set in. Obviously, not real, but it's on Earth and the supposed time period confuses me. Also, character vocabulary. It seems like the author is trying to evoke the feeling of past with a more men-centered world and swords and hings like that, but then Reia keeps saying very modern phrases (incredibly modern phrases) and it just throws me out of the loop.

Final thing is, what the hell does it mean when the author keeps using the phrases eyes bowed ? What is that even supposed to mean?! If someone knows I would really like an explanation.

Had a weird year, read some disturbing books and some very good books. I have found one of my new favourite series The Foxhole CourtThe Foxhole Court series and already ready it three times - was also lucky and the fourth book came out this year and next one is coming early 2025.

Had one of the longest reading slumps and was so behind my reading challenge I had to change it (originally said I will read 200 books, and would have exceeded it easily, but ended about 30 books short so I adjusted).

All in all, 2024 is going to be an unforgettable year for me, AND it was a year I finally decided to move back home to Croatia.

You can feel how hard the author is trying to stretch the series, but it just doesn't work.

It's too dark, but not in the good way, I mean the whole thing feels depressing and hard to read. Usually, I would love they added new supernaturals, but in this case, it just doesn't work, and the author should have stopped when Elena died.

I liked the previous book from Bonnie's POV, but could have gone with the story of how they're all dealing with the aftermath of Elena's death and moving on. All this is just unnecessary. It keeps being all mysterious and not giving us all the information to pull us in, but it just isn't working.

At this point, only my own stubbornness is keeping me from discontinuing with the series. I want to finish, even if it is just to say I read them all. Maybe I should learn to let things go.

Little bit of Bonnie's perspective coming into play!

I would like to see things from Meredith's POV as well, because Meredith has always been a bit of a mystery. I do like seeing things the way Bonnie is going through, though. Bonnie has always been shown as innocent, maybe a little too childlike and sometimes even ditzy. I love to see different types of female strength showcased, and she's definitely not typical, being psychic and descendant of druids.

It's interesting to see what the differences between Originals in the book and Originals in the show are. I do like that Klaus is supposedly much older in the book (apparently his first weapon was bronze) and that he ultimately chose to succumb to darkness. He's a more convincing villain when we don't know his pain.

Tyler is a werewolf. I guess when the book originally came out, all the werewolves were kind of slobbering, dirty and smelly creatures that looked half human half wolf, not a human that can transform into a giant wolf. Catherine might not be as big of a [B-word] as it is first assumed. Vicky is timid and unsure about her place in the high school social hierarchy.

The premise here is still very much 'if you look beautiful, you can't ultimately be bad, but if you're ugly or smelly or whatever, you must secretly be evil'. I'm not here for it any more. That's why I loved Katherine as a villain. She was going into cray-cray territory (I know that's not a real word, but I feel like any other would have been too sophisticated for what Katherine turned herself into). She was still beautiful like an angel, and she definitely had moments where you had to wonder if her brain developed properly or if she was still some kind of sociopathic child inside.

But I digress, I want to move on to rating. I had to admit, I was struggling whether to give this book three or our stars. It was close to four, I'm going to lie, but the ending
Elena coming back to life
really annoyed me. I know, not a popular opinion, but I was kind of hoping the story would move on, and not be 'one step forward, two steps backwards' type of situation.

But I'll let you decide that for yourselves.
