Gripping, leaves much to your own pondering. The narrator has a great well of feeling, but James writes economically. Most of all I was completely transported to this Venetian house through changing seasons.

Reminded me of nothing so much as Cassandra Clare’s Draco trilogy fanfic - absolutely peppered with references to, and blunt quotes from, The Princess Bride, Monty Python, Tangled, Ever After - I’m sure there’s more. It was a little too snarky for me in the beginning, but I did have to read to the end to find out what happens. The heroes’ relationship is much more chaste than the Prime series, which was a real shame  😉
