2.5 stars. publishing a full review for once!
this book was incredibly interesting and had me hooked from page 1. i also loved the writing and the idea of the plot. and like, i guess the execution was there too.
but it made me absolutely FURIOUS how doug was made out to be a “good owner” and “such a kind man” when he was literally abusing annie. and when she tried to bring that up to people, they downplayed it with “he takes good care of you” and she was never given justice.
while that can be a good plot point at times, my biggest gripe with it was that the last chapter fed into him being a good man. descriptions of him being kind to annie, wanting a future, his family, all shedding light on him in a positive way. and ultimately,
i think i just don’t like the style of literary fiction where the last 4 pages there’s just a random plot twist that sucks. like why spend 30+ pages making this man sound like he’s happy and has changed and is incredible and kindhearted when he was an abusive monster, just to make annie be angry in secret for 4 pages and end the book there? like what’s the point?
i hated that kind of ending with my husband by maud ventura so i think that might be a preference thing.
overall, very interesting, very infuriating, 2.5 stars

DNF at 40% / page 131 (“6 days”). saw a review that (spoiler!) we never find out what kit did and that’s my main gripe with the story so far so i’m done
