Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery
3.0
Probably more like 3.5 but can’t figure out how to give half stars on Good Reads. Lots to chew on and think about with regards to politics, the world, and the scary nature of right wing extreme Christian Conservatism. Feels dated now in a post-Covid and post-January 6 world. But still relevant and leaves much room for thought.
4000 Miles / After the Revolution: Two Plays by Amy Herzog
3.0
4000 miles definitely resonated with me more than After the Revolution, but they both felt dated to me and lacking in forward movement. I really did not *care* about any of the characters.
Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley
3.0
I remember first reading this in acting school for scene study class. Then it seemed like a juicy female-forward look at life in the South. In 2022 it seems a bit less entrancing. I do feel like the right director and cast could turn it on its head in modern times. It still is a juicy play for women, it still is a rare play that is frequently done BY a woman, but, especially, the handling of Babe’s relationship with Willie could do with a 2022 upgrade. All in all, still worth doing, worth reading and performing. May be best for scene study class, but I would love Beth Henley to do a revival and upgrade reflective for the world of today.
