This was one of the best books I’ve have read in such a long time. The characters were amazing, the plot was so entertaining, and the background/worldbuilding was fantastic. For an Aladdin retelling, I like this EVEN MORE than the original and everything felt more in depth from the magic of the jinn to the history and character values.
There were such great quotes and lines in this book, this is definitely a book you should highlight or annotate if u enjoy that sort of thing. Usually I feel like one of the pair is lacking in romance or just not a right fit for each other but Khoury writes Aladdin and Zahra as a great fit that you just can’t help but smiling at their moments. This is just such a great retelling I wish there were more !

I absolutely loved this novel and the translation was very well done. I think the whole time, seeing Shen Qiao follow the most righteous path was very interesting to see and I loved his character and everything he did was for the good of heart. So much that it pained me to see at times Yan Wushi betray their steadily growing relationship when giving him away to Sang Jingxing.. that part broke my heart.
Also it really makes you think about how much patience Shen Qiao has after being told countless times about his fall off half peak and how he “turned” to be a boy toy.
however, there was a point of the novel where the action scenes weren’t as exciting as previously and I think I just started to skim at the novel right after both MC went with Chen Gong to that underground area with all those monkeys.
As for Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao’s relationship, the ending was satisfying to see how Shen Qiao really felt towards him by confessing that he would do anything to have him wake up with yan wushi replying “anything?
