I first read this book in eighth grade, and I have re-read it many times since. Many people I know dislike the book, but something about Catherine and Heathcliff reach out to me, and I find it hard to let them go. Their mutual obsession haunts every page and propels the story toward its unavoidable conclusion.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but when I put the book down, I was filled with unexpected disappointment. It was good, don't get me wrong, full of teenage angst and depression. BUT--Holden Caulfield, although suitably cynical and sarcastic, lacked the depth necessary to make him a truly sympathetic protagonist.
