I cried at the end, first book to do that in a while. Sad, yet hopeful.

Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race explores the author's experience of racism within the UK through a series of essays covering topics from class to systemic racism. This book argues for anti-racist ideas throughout and could easily be seen as an introductory book on the subject within a UK context.

The introductory nature of this book is both its greatest strength and weakness. Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race is approachable, fast-paced and short, allowing the reader to gain a personal, yet fundamental, understanding of racism within the context of the UK. Readers unfamiliar with the topic and anti-racism more generally, will find this eye-opening. However, I often wished that the essays were longer and that the author had spent time explaining and arguing through certain points. I similarly would have liked the history section to be longer, purely due to enjoyment.

This book is unlikely to convince an anti-racism sceptic, but that isn't what the book set out to do. Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race is an informative yet personal read, regardless of whether you believe in the entirety of its contents. It is an essential read to understand the emotive argument behind anti-racism and the broader Black Lives Matter movement.
