What Lies Between Us by John Marrs

I went into this one with, what I felt, was a pretty good idea of what to expect. And then about 50 pages in I realized I those expectations were completely and utterly wrong.

I cannot say enough good things about this book and the twists upon twists it delivers. Shocking, thrilling, and a good dose of claustrophobia (the idea of being stuck anywhere for any length of time against one’s will sends me spiraling), “What Lies Between Us” is a refreshingly original take on generational trauma, parental love, and the lengths one would go to protect one’s child (both good and bad).

We meet the two main characters, (I’ll let you be the judge of whose the antagonist and protagonist), Maggie and her daughter Nina and their chaotically consuming mother/daughter relationship. Maggie has done some “terrible” things to keep her daughter safe and refuses to indulge Nina’s questions as to “why”. On the surface, it seems Maggie has kept her child in the dark for her own selfish reasons, but all may not appear as it seems and Nina may not be as innocent as one believes.

As with all my reviews, I won’t give much away because the dozy of an ending is worth the read through with zero knowledge of what’s about to come but I highly HIGHLY recommend giving this one a go. The pace is fast and compelling with little more than the necessary world building. This ensures the story isn’t tied down to gratuitous details while still delivering chilling scenes and emotions.

10/10 this has been my favorite book club book yet!
