I was obsessed with the 2013 Luhrmann movie, but never read the book until now (2023). I was surprised at how much the movie made the story a bit romance-centric when really it seems like The Great Gatsby is a commentary on the cruelty of wealth and the disillusionment that comes with it. Incredible read - not 5 stars because it’s quite dated at this point and some of the references and diction reflect that.

The plot was good - lot’s of unexpected turns and tension. The characters were very human althought I didn’t feel the storytelling was slow enough/fleshed out enough for me to really feel deeply for them. It seens like these two women are very obvious amalgamations of lots of women in similar situations.
