I think this book will be one that always haunts me, but in a good way. The thoughts on life, existence, and morality are so beautiful and so well written that I know I will think back on it quite a bit. Seriously, this book made my jaw drop with its inventiveness and suspense but how it also managed to completely capture the human condition in under 300 pages. This is a book to read when you want to feel existential but happy but sad but angry. Basically when you want to feel all the emotions. READ ITTT
Definitely more of a 4.7 out 5. I found this book kind of hypnotizing, while it didn’t always move me as much as Song of Achilles the ending still made my heart swell. Miller’s writing is so lyrical and she’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Circe has always been kind of an anonymous figure to me, but with this retelling/reimagining of her story I have grown to love her as a mythological figure.
Started off slow so it took some time to get through it but once the momentum picked up it became hard to put down. Definitely the beginnings of a strong fantasy trilogy. Really rich world and character building, and the found family aspect in it is really sweet and heartwarming!!
I can’t say how many times I wanted to look up Marian in her planes or Jaime’s paintings. Shipstead made these characters so real and complex it made me sad every time I remembered that they weren’t actual people! The writing was so lyrical and full it made the story so lively. I also feel like I learned a lot about old planes?? I don’t know, but I do know that I will be shoving this book down everybody’s throats every chance I get. Also if you like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo you will probably like this!!
