The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

I loved this book! I didn’t cry as much as I had heard I would...and I think I know why. This book portrayed Patroclus and Achilles’ love well, and at times I loved them both, but let’s be honest here, Achilles SUCKED.

Like, BAD.

He literally was going to let a woman, Patroclus’ friend no less, get raped—for nothing but his pride. And Patroclus isn’t safe either. He slept with the mother of Achilles child, which is for some reason literally never addressed again.

All in all, I did love the book, it was incredibly well written. I’m sure we’ve all seen the quotes whether you’ve read the book or not, but in case you haven’t—
“He is half of my soul as the poets say,”
“Did she really think I would not know him? I would know him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind. By the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”

So the only reason I remove a star is because of the way we go back and forth with Achilles. Is he a wonderful guy who loves with all his heart? Or a corrupt, power hungry wannabe god who will stop at nothing to obtain power? I guess the point is to never know...

I enjoyed this and the romance was cute and spicy. But, and this isn’t the fault of the author, I hate the miscommunication trope!! I can’t stand it, it’s the worst trope and I will accept no objections.

So I uhh….oh here we go.

I liked the way she discussed what it means to be a survivor and an immigrant. She discussed being a survivor in a real and honest way which I love. I can’t speak to what it means to be the daughter of an immigrant but I think she discussed it well

BUT

You cannot just put line breaks in an Instagram caption and call it a poem!! The formatting was a train wreck!! And the language was…a choice. I stayed for the whole train wreck so clearly there was something redeeming about it, I’m just failing to see what it is.
