i'm not the audience for this book but that being said i enjoyed some of it! i skimmed the beginning, until the inciting incident, and sort of skimmed everything after that. there were some hot parts.

Helena and Max! I'm a big fan of Max. Honestly of both of them. They had some great moments standing up for each other. I was wishing they had dug into her liking it rough a little more but that's a minor quibble.

the conflict in this one felt a liiiiiiittle contrived and the character's voices weren't quite as developed as the first book in this series, but it's still solid. violet and the earl of leigh had some cute moments and you knooooow i love a road trip. also love a mmc who's just a pathetic wet dog of a man who's obsessed with the fmc.

ohhh the friendship and the pining! by the end of this, i genuinely felt like this was a great couple. the mmc's growth and support for august was om nom nom. i ate it up. it felt like these characters weren't static or flat. the visuals were so clear.

this story grabbed me by the cunt and slam-dunked me like a basketball. delightfully mindless. inescapably cheesy. i had a great time.

This was fantastic. I think the only issue I had was being a bit blindsided by the 65%ish mark, when you find out
he cheated on his ex-wife
. The tone completely changed. That being said, I think this was such a bold story. It takes you to places you don't necessarily expect it to. It doesn't try to gloss over issues. And the characters felt so real to me, which isn't something I feel often. A part of me wished
there wasn't so much groveling on the fmc's part and just a teensy more penance from the mmc
, but even then I know the choices they made were intentional and still a worthy path to pursue. Idk, I just thought the sheer amount of creativity that went into making it was cool. the show in-book is satisfying because they take you along as if you're actually watching and it doesn't feel like a drag.

what i liked:
-interesting exploration of mmc who has significant mental illness
-fucking amazing metaphors and imagery (the pink house?! come on.)
-beautiful insights into how a people-pleasing person is in a relationship
-did i mention the metaphors go crazy

what i didn't like:
-already mentioned, but jesus christ do i hate the beginning of her books. her fmcs are doormats in a really annoying way that is maybe triggering for me personally, lol.
-there's a sense of unreality? like where are they getting all this money from to do the renovations. i don't necessarily need my rom coms to be believable but i think this one is just divorced enough from real life that i found myself feeling untethered.
-i was waiting for them to really dig into what happened to her aunt and for there to be more meat to that aspect of the story, but there just wasn't.
-the mmc kind of gave me the ick lmao and i don't think it's because he wasn't smooth or because he had major anxiety and panic attacks or even because he's a virgin. i think it's a combination of the author not being great (or confident maybe?) at writing physical intimacy. it's fade to black and idk...i just kind of saw him as sexless. it didn't feel like they had very good physical chemistry.
-the pacing was a bit odd. we're like 22%ish percent into the book and they haven't had an actual conversation yet??? idk. that aspect went a little slow for me.
-i think, ultimately, that their actions didn't feel very natural from my perspective. and maybe that's because the fmc is so completely different from who i am so when she got her catharsis i was like bitch, that's not enough. lololol. overall enjoyed it but also felt a little frustrated and weird about it. the middle was real good tho.

Rylan and Aidan. This was really fun! I enjoyed the progression of their relationship and I loved how obsessed he was with her.
