Sankofa is known to everyone throughout Ghana as someone to be feared, the adopted child of death whose touch can end lives and destroy technology. But Sankofa is also Fatima: a seven year old girl on the search for the mysterious seed that fell from the sky and gave her her destructive powers.

I’m just going to pile on all the praises for this novella: I really enjoyed it. Remote Control is a short but incredibly effective read. Near-future Ghana is described in beautiful detail, Okorafor’s writing never fails to immerse me completely and I really enjoyed following Sankofa’s emotional and spiritual journey. Some questions are left without answers, especially concerning the tech and Sankofa’s powers and while I know this is not for everyone, I actually really liked that the focus stayed on Sankofa and her character development. Remote Control is ultimately about a child dealing with grief and coping with trauma, and who despite the violence of her circumstances, manages to find love and support and reconnect with her faith.
