Bennett shatters the race and gender binary social constructs that have been handed down to us throughout history and shows us that the trauma and pain of the past is still with us in the present. The characters feel like real people and for that this book caused me to question how I judge other people's choices.

This book should come with a trigger warning - there is so much violence and rape that I felt sick and angry reading it. It's a teenage girl's story that is clearly written by a man that is tone deaf to the female experience. The author's experience with guns and the outdoors is apparent, but his beautifully-penned details of nature is not a big enough distraction from the excessive cruelty this book puts its protagonist and readers through.
