If you’re in Glasgow and you just heard that wail of despair don’t worry that was just me finishing this book. Sob.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

It was an easy read, I'll give it that, but not very substantial. I breezed through 400 pages in a few hours and the whole thing feels particular quick. This book failed to endear itself to me because you couldn't go two pages before the main character starts to cry. I mean, I know her life was hard, but it doesn't make it any less annoying when her eyes well up for the sixth time in a few days. I wish it had been more about Geisha culture and less about her pining after a man she met once as a little girl (which is weird, in and of itself) but oh well. To be honest, if you're that curious, just watch the movie, because except for the last few chapters it follows the book almost word for word, and that way you get to look at the pretty kimonos rather than reading Golden's lackluster prose. Another thing: Golden uses metaphors the way the rest of us use commas, and it gets tedious after a while. Overall, eh. Coulda been worse, but I was hoping for better.
