The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

I'm not going to lie, this book was almost a DNF for me. Up until the school comes about, this book was just sad and depressing. It continues to be sad and depressing, but with a curiosity about it.

This book was weird and interesting. But without giving everything away, that's really the most I can say.

It made me mad how much the mothers were all scrutinized and that they were failures if not perfect. It made me mad that mental health was considered, but in a negative sense. The instructors and counselors were all manipulative and abusers. It made me mad that the ending ended in a way that it did. I also felt like sometimes the plot jumped around at odd times, but that wasn't the worst.

But it was a good read. It kept my interest (after 30%, once again, almost dnf). And I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It did keep me on my toes. But I don't know if I can ever look at blue liquid the same ever again.

Is this a literary masterpiece? No
Is it kind of cringey? Yes.
Did this book make me giggle and my my feet? A little.
I thought this was a quick and easy read for a little modern-day retelling hadesxpersephone retelling.
The banter between the two of them is pretty fun sometimes. Sometimes it made me roll my eyes, but that's part of the fun.
It doesn't get smutty until like 60% in.... but then it's constant.

I liked this book. It was written very beautifully. There was magic that wasn't true unbelievable magic. It was a lot of small coincidences. They got their little happy ending. I had a cutesy cry. It was great winter literature.

Something I did not like about the book though, is that the vibe was pretty much "not having kids made me feel incomplete and now my life is complete because I can watch for this snow child" and it is just a rhetoric that annoys me. I know it's based in the 20s, and that is a lot of the mindset women had then, but it still annoyed me.

This was a quick and easy read.
The plot is really interesting--in theory. I really liked the premise, but the follow through wasn't what I hoped. I mostly predicted the big twist. That's always hard when reading thrillers.
I did like the sibling dynamic. They each had their own demons and trauma. They were fairly relatable.
The camcorder was very nostalgic, although we never quite had the same kind of home made horror story 😅

Overall, decent book. I do not regret the read. But it fell short of what I had hoped got.
