The Other Side of the Closet: A Queer Horror Collection by Patrick J. Kane

It shouldn’t have taken me this long to complete this wildly imaginative collection of Queer Horror, but here we are. Patrick J. Kane is a great writer and these stories are what I consider to be proper Queer Horror despite the craziness of some of them that may leave some readers in a “Huh?” state after reading. But that the point. When you take away the allegorical situations that he creates, Kane utilizes the daily horrors WITHIN the queer community that tend to haunt some of us while satiating others. Some of the stories may need a second or third reading for certain nuisances to land (not every queer/gay/lesbian/trans/etc person have the exact same experience), but those nuisances that hit hard during the first read through land resoundingly loud and clear. Not saying he beats you over the head with his message (he’s not; he’s sort of letting the reader decide for themselves how they feel about the story at hand), but you get enough satisfaction - or rather I did - at the end that you smile broadly, saying “a-ha!” as the sense of familiarity and clarity hits. In short, cause it is late and I’m a bit loopy, I want to read more from Patrick J. Kane and his contributions to the Queer Horror canon.
