The Battle of the Bookshops

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

DNF at 25%. After going back over the summary multiple times, there is no mention of this being a Romeo and Juliet retelling. If I had known this fact, I most likely would not have picked up this book. I am not a huge fan of retellings and really do not like Shakespeare so this just wasn't the book for me. The amount of similarities and references to the play within the first quarter of the book made it difficult for me to enjoy. The writing almost felt Shakespearean to me, where as I would prefer a more modern take. It wasn't just a retelling, it was constant references to Shakespeare, jokes about the main characters being Romeo and Juliet, names being so similar it took me out of the story, and constant reminders that the families have been in a long time generational feud.

This was such a cute book, and it felt like a love letter to NYC. I kept getting annoyed with the FMC and her money/relationship issues but overall, I really enjoyed it. If you like strong, independent women, billionaire romance, sort of enemies to lovers, summer flings, and fake dating, you'll enjoy this! I was dreaming of enjoying a summer in New York the whole time I was reading, and I think this is going to be the perfect beach read this summer. It's light, fluffy, and just a lot of fun (besides the annoying "I can't be with a man who has money" comments). The ending felt a bit rushed to me but if you're in need a summer romance full of banter that will have you giggling, make sure you add this to your TBR!

No matter where you think this book is going to end up, you'll probably be wrong. There are so many twists, I had whiplash by the end and I definitely would have never guessed everything. The pace is up and down and I found myself fully engrossed at times, while other times I felt sluggish trying to get through. I did figure out a majority of what was going to happen but like I said there's no way you'll figure everything out. This was a messy, drama filled, rich family murder mystery, with a hint of reality tv. If you like rich domestic thriller, you'll want to check this one out!
