The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X
5.0
Wow. There were so many things we weren't taught about during Black History Month in school. Malcolm X lived a very interesting life - his perspective on life in America as a person of color was eye-opening, as was learning about his experiences as a POC. I think it should be required reading in high school, I should have never waited this long to read it.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

A Must Read - even if you watch the Hulu show
Incredibly good writing - disturbing, gripping, story that is a cautiinary of where ultra conservative Christianity and unquestioned patriarchy turned into the law of the land could take us. A lesson in why separation of church and state is vitally important. I love Jesus, but I know we cannot legislate belief - this story shows one version of what can happen when religious fanatics force their will upon a population.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ. What an important work - an entirely impressive debut novel. The most relevant read for the times we are living in. Heartbreaking? - absolutely. Inspiring? - Definitely. if you have not read this book - put down whatever else you're reading and get to reading "The Hate U Give". I also highly recommend the unabridged Audible version for those who prefer to listen to stories.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

This is a MUST READ. I think it was the NY Times that called this story "painfully beautiful" and that's as accurate as you can possibly get. I loved this story and the ending - WOW. Such a good book.
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

I loved this story! I typically enjoy Kristin Hannah's books, but "The Nightingale" and "The Great Alone" are two of her very best ever. War, Romance, Family Relationships, Friendships forged through the greatest of trials that is the Holocaust - this was an engrossing read with characters I loved. Get your kleenex ready!
