This behemoth of a book is unique to anything I would every imagine reading. It could be described as part crime thriller, part sci-fi, part fantasy, part romance. Murakami really packed every kind of story into this novel. Two people, destined to meet, cross into a different universe to follow their fate. At times graphic and sexually disturbing, 1Q84 opens the door to Japan in the early 80s and to the dystopia created by a religious cult and their gods, the "Little People." The last third of the book was a tad slow-moving, so that is why it did not receive 5 stars from me.
I enjoyed Woolf's exploration and critique of gender roles and inequality. I have only given this 3 stars because I found parts to be rambling and down right odd, making me wish that I would just finish the book already. Nevertheless, I still wish to continue my experimentation with Virginia Woolf's work.
I liked Never Let Me Go, but this novel was just too superficial. I didn't connect with any of the characters and was annoyed at the flow of the dialogue. The setting is cool (Arthurian), but overall I felt bored by the plot and a bit confused when characters had sudden outbursts or insights that were not led up to.
