📖Review: She Gets the Girl📖 By: Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick Genre: YA romance Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ / 5 Publishing date: 5th of April 2022 Provided by: Simon and Schuster Australia [TW: alcoholism (parent), toxic relationship (emotional manipulation and gaslighting), internalised racism (parent)]
🟢 What I liked: ↪️ Cute: the romance elements of the book were incredibly cute - I loved Alex helping Molly, especially with the practice date 🛼 It was my favourite part of the novel ↪️ College setting: although a bit cliché, it was so cool to read a YA novel set in college (even it was overly American ... but that’s an Australian’s problem haha). Although this could mean that some people classify the novel as NA, I think it was super light and appropriate for younger audiences as well
🔴 What I didn’t like: ↪️ Characters: I really struggled with differentiating between Alex and Molly’s chapters as they were written in the exact same way, so their ‘unique’ narrative voices were extremely similar. I’ve also read Lippincott’s previous books, and the characters are all written the same way, so this exacerbated the issue ↪️ Predictable: the book was very uniform - nothing really shocked me because I’ve read YA romance novels formatted exactly like this before, making it very similar to these (the lesbian romance was a stand-out though!) ↪️ Rushed ending: there was some really massive, life-changing conclusions that the characters came to at the end of the book (as they usually do), however it all happened in a short chapter or two, which really lessened the impact of the ending. Additionally, some of these conclusions would be very complicated and long in real life, however in the book, they were overly simplified and easy; this is one of my biggest pet peeves so I was unsatisified with the ending because of this
🟡 I recommend: ↪️ If you’re looking for a cute romance set in college
