I was definitely really intrigued by the characters and the world. I loved the hints about Issi’s past being scattered throughout, though I found them to be a bit obvious. The book kept me hooked, even though there were definitely some scenes where I had to read things a few times to understand (awkward events or jumps). I loved the side characters and hope to see/learn more of them in the next book. I enjoyed the chemistry between Adrian and Issi, and I’m looking forward to seeing them actually be together in the next book. I’m excited for Issi’s growth as a queen now that she’s picked her side.

The whole Safira plotline REALLY irritated me. I never truly felt like there was much resolution to it. The dungeon was cool and all but like… still unsatisfying— plus, Issi saw Safira on Adrian’s arm at the first night of the Burning Rites and never said anything to him about that. Safira lied about sleeping with him for those nights but Issi literally saw them together.

For as much as I liked Adrian, he irritated me too. He KNOWS who Issi is. He KNOWS that he took her from all she knows and literally flipped her world upside down (and this is before the Yessenia revelation) and is still not super accommodating to her feelings. He didn’t expect the people of his court to attack her mentally/emotionally? He should’ve done more to help her there. He knew she was having these intense feelings and he knew that they came from their history, but she’s literally falling in love with a man after only knowing him for days…have some empathy, dude.

Also, this felt soooooo much like FBAA. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll absolutely be reading Queen of Myth and Monsters when it comes in December, but it felt a bit odd to me how much this screamed FBAA.

I LOVED the couple and I felt that the overall pace was really nice. I felt like the multiple conflicts wrapped up way too easily and conveniently (the Hektor thing made me laugh), and I didn’t exactly understand why she was so dead set on killing him. Also, for such a sexually-charged narrative, I was shocked it was closed door.
